How a Firewall Works
Firewalls are beneficial for many reasons. A firewall can be software or hardware. The firewall protects a network from intrusion by monitoring incoming and outgoing network traffic. People who have their firewall enabled can prevent unauthorized access to their network. There are different types of firewalls that have many purposes and offer various levels of protection.

What are the Different Types of Firewalls?

There are three primary types of firewalls, including:
Proxys
Packet filters
Stateful Inspection
Proxys:A proxy server and proxy firewall work together. A proxy firewall is commonly referred to as a gateway firewall. This type of firewall is a newer addition to the world of network security. These firewalls can inspect applications and monitor any connections that are open. Proxy firewalls are more advanced than stateful inspections firewalls. Proxy firewalls can analyze protocols for layer seven which include FTP and HTTP.

Packet Filters:
Packet filters distinguish good packets from bad ones by using the blocking process. Packet filters view the source and destination the packers are traveling to determine which packets are good and bad. Along with the packet filter process comes firewall packet mingling. Many programs contain packet filtering software. You would use this type of firewall for a local network to block unwanted access.

Stateful Inspection:
Stateful inspection is a type of technology that firewalls use. Stateful inspection is frequently referred to as dynamic packet filtering. This type of firewall monitors the state of active connections. The state of active connections determines whether the packets are allowed through the firewall.

How Does a Firewall Work?

There are basic and advanced firewalls. All firewalls have a basic operation and function. A firewall is similar to a filter in an air conditioning system. A firewall filters bad connections and other things that can cause system malfunction for your desktop, laptop, tablet, mobile phone or anything other device that can connect to the internet. A firewall can be programmed to let specific packets and information to and from your computer. Some people have more than one firewall for added network protection. Firewalls can protect a residential or commercial network.

Protection for Residential Networks
Firewalls that are created for residential networks are simpler than firewalls that are created for commercial purposes. In residential situations, there is only one network that needs to be protected. A residential firewall is also known as a personal firewall. A personal firewall protects personal or private network and any personal computer. These instances are protected from malicious network attacks.

Protection for Business Networks
Businesses require more protection for their networks and are more complex than residential firewall protection. Large corporations have more than one firewall and they obtain complex codes that are difficult to manipulate because of the enhanced security to protect their extensive networks. Many business owners configure their firewall settings to prevent business failure by preventing employees from sending valuable company information to others via email or any other method that sends data outside of the current network. Business owners can set their inbound firewall protection to limit their employees network access. These network restrictions block unwanted sites in the workplace, including social media.

What are the Benefits of a Firewall?

Firewalls are more important and beneficial than many people realize. Firewalls:
Monitor traffic
Prevent Trojan attacks
Stop hackers from intruding
Stop keyloggers
Monitoring Traffic:Traffic that travels to and from your computer is not all bad but it is not all good. Firewalls monitor traffic your computer receives. A two-way firewall is great for monitoring traffic. A firewall inspects each packet of data entering and exiting your computer’s network.

Preventing Trojan Attacks
A firewall can prevent harmful Trojan attacks. A Trojan is a virus that can damage your computer and cause it to malfunction permanently. Trojans are harmful viruses that can destroy your computer and another person’s computer. When a Trojan infects a computer, it accesses personal and public files and attaches itself to them. The virus spreads when infected files are sent from one computer to another, such as email and instant attachments on social media, including Twitter and Facebook.

Stopping Intruder Attacks
Keyloggers are similar to hackers but more dangerous. Keyloggers can access any online account and personal information by keystroke targeting. Keystroke targeting allows keyloggers to monitor every move a person makes on their computer, including their location and websites they visit. Keyloggers have access to an individual’s personal and
financial information.

What Does A Firewall Protect?

A firewall protects users from many different things. The internet world is vast and full of malicious threats. Firewalls protect people from these malicious attacks. Malicious attacks can be from the inside or outside of a network. There are two types of attacks, inside and outside. Inside attacks come from previously installed software on a computer. Outside attacks come from people trying to intrude into a network so they can control the computer. A firewall protects a computer and network from inside and outside attacks.

Who Can Use A Firewall?

Anyone can use a firewall. Whether it is for business or residential purposes, a firewall can be used to protect any type of network. To turn the firewall on for a computer, open Windows firewall or Windows firewall protection. Click the start button and find the control panel. Click control panel, then click security. Once the security tab is open, click Windows firewall. To ensure the firewall is active, make sure it is on. Once the firewall is set to on, the firewall will take care of the dirty work.
